Presentation Dued to its nature and privileged location, Montejunto
demands us for a walk at its surroundings for this is the only way to
fully embrace its historical wealth and natural
beauty. Starting by visiting
the Real Fábrica do Gelo (Royal Ice Factory), we will
continue by Calçada dos Frades (monks sidewalk) till the
summit, where a visit to the ruins of the Convento
Dominicano (Dominican Monastery) dated from the twelve century
awaits. From here on we promptly reach the mountain plateau, a huge
natural sightseeing spot. After contouring the massive trough dense pine tree woods, we hike the southern half hillside. 9h00 – Meeting Meeting point – Centro de Interpretação da Paisagem
Protegida da Serra de Montejunto (Center of Interpretation of the
Protecting Landscape of the Mountain range of
Montejunto) Description Immediately submerging in luxurious woods, we will visit the Royal Ice Factory, from the eighteenth century, responsible for the supply of ice to the capital – Lisboa – in those times. Ascending by the enduring vestiges
of the old monks sidewalk (Calçada dos Frades) we will hike till the
summit and have the opportunity to relive a little more of history as we
find the twelfth century Dominican Monastery and the thirteenth century
Chappel of Our Lady of Snows (Capela de Nossa Senhora das
Neves). Continuing our way in the
direction of the plateau of Montejunto, where we can have a wide and
magnificent view from North to South, reaching the eye from Cabo Carvoeiro
(Carvoeiro’s Cape) till Lisboa and beyond into Alentejo. Crossing the
plateau trough a open path among the bush vegetation and the calcareous
rocks we will have time to the deserved rest and
nourishment. As we penetrate into the dense
wood of pine-trees, we start contouring the mountain’s southern half
hillside. From this path we can sight towns and villages, large crop
fields and forest woods that side Montejunto…until we take the path that
leads us to the starting point. Difficulty level:
